Slew Ring Installation

As an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), we design slew rings and bearings to handle radial and axial loads based on drive specifications. As your go-to OEM, we offer in-stock and custom solutions for applications that require rotations. While learning how to install bearings takes time, Slew Master Inc. suggests these tips and tricks for installing a slew ring.

How to Install a Slew Ring

Construction cranes, industrial turntables, wind turbines, missile launchers and other heavy-duty, high-precision pieces of equipment require technicians that prioritize part exactness and installation accuracy for long-lasting operation life. Follow these steps to ensure proper slew ring installation:

Check the equipment: Open the purpose-built box designed to transport and store the slew ring in an upright position. Make sure the bearing arrived pre-lubricated with anti-rust oil. Also, check that manufacturers put into place anti-slip and anti-vibration measures. A proper packaging and handling process helps you to avoid mounting surface distortion and other areas of concern.

Examine the installation surface and bearing: Check the intended installation surface for flatness and the bearing for stiffness. Ensure that there is no dirt, dust or other debris on the surface, which could result in a slew of problems such as false readings, bolt fatigue and total bolt failure. Anything from metal chips to paint residue or burrs impacts the condition of the bearing. Minimizing debris and corrosion helps avoid excessive wear and tear, increased stress concentrations and other problem areas.

Position the loading plug and hardness gap in the minimal load zone: This loading zone, known as the non-load area or non-constant load area, is usually marked with an "S" and differs from the heavy load zone.

Cross-tighten the mounting bolts: This process allows you to make the radial positioning. Fit the bolts with a leveling washer for proper installation. The bearing races should be round after you tighten the bolts. Follow the procedures to check for final bearing torque and gear backlash.

Grease the slew bearing: Grease the bearing while it's swinging for even distribution of the lubricant. You can check the operator's manual for specified amounts and intervals of heavy-duty, extreme-pressure grease necessary to lubricate the fittings. Frequent and proper greasing keeps the equipment running efficiently and effectively. If you're running gear constantly, your product may require greasing more often to extend the life of your slew ring bearings.

Use the turntable bearing for 100 hours of continuous operation: After this time frame, carry out a comprehensive check to make sure everything still meets the requirements. Perform the same test every 500 hours. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential for operation.
